Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation - The Loran Award

The Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation (CMSF) administers the Loran Awards. Founded in 1988, CMSF is the leading Canadian merit scholarship organization and a registered charity (855-132643-RR0001).

Each year CMSF grants 30 Loran Awards to students who show promise as leaders in the many walks of life. These awards, valued at up to $75,000 over four years, are funded entirely by corporations, foundations and individuals. These donors believe in the value of investing in students who demonstrate character, service and leadership.

Reasons to support CMSF:

  • Assessors and interviewers consider of range of factors not limited to the marks on a student's transcript
  • National, intensive selection process identifies 30 students from an initial pool of approximately 3,600 who demonstrate character, service and leadership
  • The Loran Award is not a simple cheque. It includes a summer program, one-on-one mentorship, and participation in retreats, fora and other events
  • Twenty-three partner universities match the cash component of the award by waiving tuition for Loran scholars. They also provide on-campus staff representatives.
  • Loran scholars are challenged by each other, their mentors and CMSF staff to make the most of the opportunities created by receiving a Loran Award
