Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation - The Loran Award

There are three associations that are affiliated with the Loran Award:

  • The Loran Scholars' Association -- an association for current scholars

The Loran Scholars' Association is designed to help scholars connect across the country. Scholars connect with each other through chapters at their universities. The association also publishes a newsletter called the Acadamian and the annual Scholar-to-Scholar manual, which allows students to pass on their knowledge to incoming scholars.

  • The Loran Alumni Association

The Loran Alumni Association (formerly the CMSF Alumni Association) was founded in November 2003 -- a direct result of many alumni wanting to play a larger role in ensuring the future success and growth of CMSF. Erin Eacott was the first coordinator of the alumni association and played an instrumental role in launching the organization. The outgoing co-ordinator serves on CMSF's board for a two-year term. Gurpreet Brar (Loran '03) currently serves in this role on the board of directors of CMSF. Mark Schaan (Loran '97) is the current co-ordinator of the Loran Alumni Association.

The Loran Alumni Association has three main objectives:

    1. To provide a network of Alumni for CMSF to leverage for social events, mutual discussion, and as a resource for volunteer and employment opportunities.
    2. To facilitate information exchange between CMSF and Alumni.
    3. To assist CMSF with time, money, vision, and development.

There are three distinct formal roles within the association:

    1. Coordinator: The head of the Loran Alumni Association. The coordinator is responsible for facilitating planning and execution of key priorities and programs.
    2. Class Reps: Each class of Loran alumni has a champion responsible for ensuring their respective class remains engaged with CMSF via communications, event planning, and programs.
    3. CMSF Liaision: A staff representative from CMSF who acts as a conduit between CMSF and the association.

  • Friends of Canadian Education -- Friends of Canadian Education is a US-based organization. They financially support institutions in Canada that recognize and foster individuals in undergraduate study who show leadership potential and a commitment to activities that benefit the community both on and outside the campus. FCE was created by US supporters of the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation (CMSF), most of them associated in one way or another with The Morehead-Cain Foundation in Chapel Hill, NC.
