Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation - The Loran Award

Teachers and counselors are integral to the selection process. You are the front line, helping to identify and encourage students to apply for a Loran award. As you will read below, 50-60 of the 76 spots at national selections are reserved for sponsored candidates. We take your endorsement seriously.

We hope that the following answers to frequently asked questions by teachers and counselors will help you to choose the best candidates to sponsor and allow you to advise them well on the selection process:

What is the deadline?

How many students may I sponsor?

  • Each high school may sponsor up to 3 students. CEGEPs may sponsor up to 4 students.

What kind of student should I sponsor?

  • Strong applicants demonstrate the following characteristics: strong academic performance and moral character, commitment to serving others, great potential as leaders, independent thinking, and a willingness to take meaningful risks. Check out this video to learn more about Loran scholars.

How many awards are available? Are there regional quotas?

Is this an academic award?

  • The award is not based solely on academics. While there is a minimum average to be considered (85%), we are interested in well-rounded candidates who are active in both their communities and their school.

When are applications available? Where can I get them?

  • Application forms are sent to schools in early September and are also available on our web site. Please see the important dates.

What is the difference between the sponsored and the direct pools? Is there a benefit to being sponsored?

  • Sponsored applicants have the benefit of attending regional interviews in person, rather than via telephone.
  • Of the 76 students who were invited to national selections in 2007, 50 of them came from the sponsored pool
  • Historically, more sponsored students receive awards and recognition (honour citations and semi-finalist certificates) than do students who apply through the Direct Pool.

Are Loran awards tenable at any Canadian university?
